Would you believe me when I tell you that there are a lot of things we bloggers can learn from Winnie the Pooh? Sounds crazy, huh? But what if I could enumerate the things Pooh taught me that made me a better blogger, then would you believe me?
On taking charge
Let me start with the first lesson I picked up from our hunny loving friend. Don’t wait for things to come to you. You may notice that the only time Pooh sat around was when he had all his friends with him. Other times, he’s either wandering around looking for Piglet, talking to Owl for advice, or seeking out Christopher Robin for help.
The same thing goes with blogging. You won’t find friends (or blog followers) unless you go out and find them. If you don’t blog hop and share your ideas (through commenting), chances are, no one will know you exist. The same thing goes with finding answers to questions you might have or finding solutions to your problems. If you don’t leave your comfort zone (a.k.a your own blog) to ask veteran bloggers for tips or advice, you won’t get any.
On being patient
The second thing I learned from Pooh is to be patient. He hardly got upset about anything. Even when no one listened, he’d keep repeating the start of his sentence until someone took notice. Now, this’ll frequently happen to you, especially if you’re a newbie blogger. You’ll feel that no one cares about what you say, or that no one understood what you said. It’s okay. You just need to find another way to convey the message clearer. Then, they will listen and understand.
On knowing what really matters
Another thing about Pooh is that he knows what’s more important. He didn’t care if anybody in the group messed up and got them lost in the woods, he cherishes the fact that they got to where they needed to be in the end.
Relating it to blogging, you may feel that little typographical or grammatical errors are gargantuan blunders, but they’re all minute details if you consider the fact that even with those stumbles, you were still able to get your point across. Isn’t that what ultimately matters?
On choosing the right words
Pooh rarely used complex words when he spoke. The same thing goes with blogging. You may be well-versed in the English vocabulary, but not everyone is. Using highfaluting words like highfaluting can lose people for the simple fact that not a lot of people know what this means. Simple words get messages across easier, plain and simple.
On staying calm
Pooh didn’t really seem to panic much, now, did he? No matter how much their plans went out of hand, he just stayed calm.. to a fault. I guess we can all learn from that. Life if a bunch of curve balls waiting to happen. Some we can anticipate and catch, while some fly by. So, things don’t always go as we planned it. Big deal! We can always just come up with other plans and pick up from where we left off, right? Panicking just won’t do us any good.
On being cautious
You never see Pooh hurrying when he goes around the Hundred Acre Woods. He took his sweet time going about his wanderings because he didn’t want to accidentally step on anything left around by mistake. Neither should we.
Taking things in stride doesn’t seem to be all that practical if you consider the fact that Internet time isn’t the same as real time. But would rushing get you any closer to your goal sooner? Rushing significantly increases your risk of missing out on something amazing or important. Remember that taking one careful step at a time may seem like a snail’s pace to other, but it ensures that we don’t miss anything on our way to reaching our goals.
So what do you think? Is Pooh just a silly, old bear or is he a wise blogging guru?
