With social media’s popularity continually rising, more and more people are getting the idea that there’s money in it, especially in blogging. I came across this interesting article written by an almost famous blogger. I suggest you read the article before going through this post.
He wrote some interesting numbers and scenarios as a blogger, disappointing results that he received from his blog and a diminished hope to make huge amount of money. Is there really money in blogging?
High traffic doesn’t always equate to income
So proves his website’s recent traffic spike. On the day that his identity was revealed in the New York Times, more than half a million people paid his website a visit. But if you ask him how much he had earned for the month after having that many visitors in a day, along with a hundred dollars or so in AdSense earnings, his answer was a weak $1,039.81.
Surely you weren’t expecting that half a million hits per day for 30 days would only earn that little.
Think about it, if he can’t rake in money after all the hard work and quality content put into it, how can our blogs do otherwise? His website was certainly popular enough to reach half a million viewers, but it didn’t really earn him much. If you’re an upcoming blogger, then you’re probably thinking that there’s not much of a future for you in professional blogging.
However, if you ask an expert on this subject, they might have a different opinion on this matter. They say that a clear business model (or a lack thereof) will determine whether your site will be able to rake in revenues.
Note that they’re not saying we can’t make money off of our blogs. You can, rest assured about that. It’s a matter of laying out a perfectly working business model.
On using ads to earn
If you were a running a broadcasting network, then that will work. But you’re not, so it’s not really that feasible. Think about it, you won’t be able to help but watch television commercials if you’re tuned into your favorite show. But that doesn’t always prove effective in terms of blogs.
Let’s not dismiss the fact that it works for certain types of content websites. But it works mostly on blogs that are aimed at providing solutions to real world problems rather than blogs that give people a go-to place for killing time.
On earning hard cash
If you want to earn real money from your blog, offer your readers solutions to real-world problems. If you can’t offer your readers something they really need, then I doubt that you can generate revenues from your blog.
It’s not bad to want to set-up a blog concentrated on entertainment or one that offers readers a great means to while away time, but it’s not going to make you money. At the moment, people are under the belief that entertainment is free. It might take you more than just a blog to help you sell your site.
If you’re hoping posting advertisements on your blog will help you generate income, it will, but it can only earn you so much. You might want to look for other ways to add to your AdSense income if you want to earn more.
What we all need to understand
We all need to break away from the notion that it’ll be easier to do business just because it’s online. True, using web 2.0 tools will make working on your business easier, but it won’t compensate for a lack of business knowledge.
Take the time to know what you’re getting into and what works to get you to where you want to be. Rely on time-tested methods and you won’t go wrong.
Give your audience quality content, and they’ll come back. Solve real-world problems. Look for a need and fill it. It always works.
