Use Blog Comments As A Strategy To Drive Quality Traffic

by Rob Angeles on June 24, 2009

Many bloggers, but not all, take the time out to comment on other people’s blogs. Some people think that other people should comment first before they comment back, while some just genuinely don’t know how much commenting has to offer to improve traffic on their own blog.

That is, of course, if you know how to properly comment.

Let’s get started with some common mistakes:

Leaving fast comments to pick curiosity is a no-no. You might ask, “why not, it brings in traffic.” Sure it brings in traffic, but only for a short while. Why not try sharing a more insightful comment and have people see that you have more to offer on your own blog aside from what you have shared on the comment.

Competing for first or second comment spot isn’t necessary. It’s true that the first and the second comment spot always get the most click-throughs. But unless you offer the readers more than a simple word like “first” or “second” just to show that you were the first the comment, those click-through won’t mean anything.

Now, let’s move on to how comments can bring you quality traffic:

Aside from giving people an idea of what your blog is about through your comments, quality commenting also helps you establish relationships with other people. You develop friends or loyal blog followers when you exchange great ideas with them over comment threads. You find like-minded people or people who’d want to learn from you, both of which can rake in significant amount of quality inbound traffic. It could be in the form of a re-Tweet, a vote in social bookmarking sites, etc.

I know that we’ve mentioned that there’s no point battling it out for first or second comment positions. But it doesn’t mean that you can’t try for it. Just make sure that you give the blog owner and his followers something that would actually make them stand up and notice you. But that’s just me. Some people would think that it’s rather pointless to fight for first comment, even if you do have something good to say.

What do you think about this?

@nobe - I think there are already initiatives from 3rd parties to impose rules on comments. That's why I love Disqus. So democratic.
  • Nice tip Rob! I have learned a lot. :)

  • @Roy - Nahhhh you're doing ok and you're not overdoing it. I love reading sensible comments that connects. I think doing comments for the sake of expressing your thoughts regarding a post is a good gesture. Not only it expose your authority regarding the matter but you contribute.

@Rey - That was funny. That's the best, frank push I've seen this year. Thanks for dropping by and hope to see you more here.

@Jan - I absolutely agree with you. One way to give respect to the blog author is to at least put time in composing a reaction to the post. If a commenter is only after a link, in my opinion, he's in the wrong place.
