We all have our favorite local supermarket. In places where hyper marts like SM Supermart or Big R are nowhere to be found, a local supermarket will be there. These are the type of supermarkets that are being operated by a family, a typical setting in the local retail industry where Dad is the General Manager, Mom is the Finance Manager.
Of all the industry I’ve worked with, I love retail the most. According to study, if a store has an online store, only 10% of its total gross comes from it. People still prefer to get out of their cars and enter sliding doors. If maintaining customers online is already a challenge, imagine how it’s like to implement the same within a store.
For 7 years, I’ve dealt with owners who still prefer the old ways of doing business. Yes, it works and involves less risk. They’ve been doing the same thing for years and their methods brought in customers and revenue.
Circa 1998, the POS (Point-of-Sale) System race was at its peak. Retailers were implementing different systems such as warehouse management, replenishments and consolidations, to give them an idea of what’s happening in their business. Information was in numbers and charts.
From branded POS terminals to generic PC based stations and barcode readers, POS systems where everywhere.
I wanted to see how our retailers have progressed in this age of conversation so; I tried Googling Robinson’s BIG R Supercenter. Viola! Nothing! And I tried SM Supermarket, again, viola! Under construction! These are 2 of our big players in the retail industry where many of the local players look up to. I’m very much surprise why these 2 gorillas are not present online.
