The Social Web Is Not Really That Social

by Rob Angeles on June 21, 2009

Media sites, social networking sites to be more specific, are dominating the information highway nowadays. If you’ve been on the Internet a while, you’ve surely noticed how far we’ve come from the days certain email service providers wouldn’t even let us send an email to other people person who uses a different email provider.

Surely, the web has gone far from what we expected it to go. But it isn’t as social as you’d think.

Current social media sites aren’t that much different to the old exclusive email days. Each and every social media site you know will have their own “members only” profiling system, internal messaging system, and exclusive applications.

But don’t you wish we could do away with that? Make one centralized profile for people from different social media platform to see. Wouldn’t that be easier?

If you think about it, there’s a downside to this. With a single “passport” for all sites, privacy will be compromised. Or does it have to be?

I want to know what you think about this, though. Would you prefer that we had a single profile for all the social media platforms we’re a member of? Or do you like it the way it is right now?

  • @elmot & @DiTesco - Privacy is really a big deal if we are talking about the concept of having a "centralize" account or passport. With people obsessed with identity theft, a site which can do this would probably be a haven. On the other side of the coin, if a central location can be proven robust and unbreakable, then it may assure people that their identities are safe. But the question is, is there such thing as unbreakable.

I remember Oracle claiming this one and learned that they are not.
  • You are right about having too many social sites. Having one identity or one single passport can be great, but on the other hand, has its advantages and also disadvantages. Right now, openid is one form to achieve a single identity. It is almost widespread and is accepted by virtually all important social media platforms. Privacy is obviously very important and can be compromised. This is where the advantage also comes in. If you are a victim of identity theft, someone can have access to all your accounts and that could be damaging.
  • Oppps. Sorry. I meant - Privacy is obviously very important and can be compromised. This is where the disadvantage also comes in. If you are a victim of identity theft, someone can have access to all your accounts and that could be damaging.
  • it could be a great idea to actually have one access or "passport" to all the social networking sites, however i will also agree that privacy and security will be obviously compromised. i think i would still rather go with the conventional of having different access to each social network than be hacked or some people steal my account...maybe at least they could only hack on my my numerous accounts.
