The Road From Blogging to Microblogging

by Rob Angeles on August 23, 2009

socialmediatips_microbloggingDo you remember the time when blogging was really big? I mean, everybody (me included) I knew got into the bandwagon and opened up a blog account or two. Can you really blame us? Blogging did open up a more convenient means of journaling everyday happenings and thoughts apart from the conventional, hand-written journals.

But nowadays, you’ll notice that there are lesser and lesser people posting on blogs or producing podcasts. Why is that? There’s a big probability that they, too have moved on to the new “shiny” thing – microblogging sites.

To name a few examples of such microblogging sites, you have Twitter and Plurk. A possible reason why people are shifting over to such platforms is because it’s easier to use. You no longer have to compose a long post just to say what you have in mind. With microblogging sites, you simply post a short message.

Also, with microblogging sites, interaction is very instantaneous. You can immediately reply back and forth. Reactions come back quite faster than it would with regular blog posts. The only shortcoming I see with microblogging sites is the limited amount of characters you can use for your post. Otherwise, microblogging seems to work for a lot of people.

But if you think about it, conventional blogging has its own unique appeal. Reading about something in a more detailed perspective as opposed to a rather short and vague statement is great. At least that’s for some people.

I’d like to know if you’re one of the many people who’ve traded their blogs for their Twitter accounts. If so, what made you decide to shift?
