I attended Roof Camp awhile ago and it was a fun experience to be with fellow geeks who are future looking, mavericks and fearless individuals who love sharing and distilling ideas from concept to reality. Yes, that is Roof Camp and if you’re that type of person, you should attend future events.
One of the speakers in Roof Camp 8 was Brian Quebengco, the man behind Inovent, founded mid 2004 and is based in Makati, Philippines. They are a small, privately held company that specializes in R2D : Research, Design and Development.
Brian is a technopreneur and during his talk, he shared how he started Inovent. It all started with a plan and a product built around the cat, pig and the frog. A pattern usually found in successful brands, all 3 characteristics needs to be aligned and work simultaneously to trigger a tipping point.
So, what’s with the cat, pig and frog?
Cat – To start, be a copy-cat. Copy a product. Observe, everybody is doing it. We see different brands from different industries following the copy-cat pattern. Copy, but not to the extent of becoming a replica.
Pig – Piggy back on existing trends, technology and other innovations. One way or another, it will help our product gain traction. When you stand on the shoulder of giants, you see a clearer view of what’s above right?
Frog – And leap like a frog. Our product may had been built on existing ideas, piggy back on existing platforms yet it becomes something new because of how we package it or how we present it to our customers. We create an edge and whatever this edge is, will determine the reach of what we created.
It was my first time to hear about the cat, pig and the frog. I learned a lot from Brian and how he managed to move forward with his passion. Today, being unique is something that’s hard to attain considering that innovations appear here and there.
It wouldn’t hurt if we look at the cat, pig and the frog pattern. As long as they are aligned and able to connect the dots, it can produce the next killer product, app or service. And it will be possible for you to be the next Brian Quebengco.
