So you sought help from a social media expert and were told to consider putting up a corporate blog, what do you do? Do you immediately jump on the advice and open up a business blog? Or do you take some time to think about it first?
Sometimes, these guys get excited about everything social media and just push ideas without strategies without really thinking about it.
What else is there to consider, you say? Lots, actually. Here are some things you might want to ponder on:
Do I really need a corporate blog?
Personally, I’d say that you do. But this is your business that we’re talking about, not mine. So you will be the one who’ll have the ultimate say on this. Ask yourself if you really need one or not.
Some people put up business blogs to keep up with the competition. This is actually a good reason because you’d want to keep yourself at par with other businesses. But some people just want to start up company blogs to look trendy or tech savvy, which isn’t really a great motivation for keeping the blog well-maintained.
You just have to remember that once you start the blog, there’ no turning back. You’ll have to invest time and resources to making sure that the blog works to your advantage.
Do I have the means to keep a blog?
A very good question to ask. As what was mentioned above, you’ll need to invest time and resources to maintain a blog. Do you have it? Do you have extra time to search for resources to use for your blog posts? Do you have a blogger to delegate the task of maintaining the blog to? Do you have the money to use to hire a dedicated blogger if you can’t manage it yourself? All these are great considerations to think of when you’re looking at available means for sustaining a corporate blog.
How will online audiences react to my company?
This is important question to ask because it’ll help predict the fate of your corporate blog. You can do this by using different listening tools like Google Blog Search of through sites like Technorati. By using your company name as a search parameter, you’ll be able to find blog entries of posts that may give you a glimpse of what other people are thinking or saying about your company. Once you’re able to get the results, you can pretty much gauge if opening up a business blog of your own will be a good move or not.
Once you’ve already thought these points through, you should be able to decide whether it’s a good move to put up your own business blog or not.
