Have you ever been to a party where the host wants all the attention to him/her and dominates the entire conversation? How about one where the host doesn’t talk at all? How’d you like the party? I’ve been to one too many such parties and found myself bored to tears. I actually left the party early and went to hang out with some other friends instead.
Well, you can say that social media is kind of like this big party where people from different places are invited to join. Let’s take a blog for example.
Your blog is the party venue and you are the host. You invite people to the party and initiate the conversation with your blog entry. People come in and they start talking on the comments section.
There are two scenarios that can happen here:
One, is that you’re going to try to dominate the conversation by too loud or too often. The result: you outtalk the people who visit your blog and make it seem like you want your voice to be heard and not theirs.
Two, is that you can just stay in the background and not participate on the conversation at all. The result: you make people think that you don’t give a rat’s ass about what they have to say.
For some people, especially those whose followers tend to comment a lot, replying often can work. But if you’re always trying to steer the conversation into a direction that you want, you can bet your blog that your followers will start dropping one by one.
As for the second scenario, I doubt if it ever worked for anybody, considering how now responding to commenter may make you look like a snob. Now, seriously, who likes a snob?
You may have the perfect blog or the perfect content to lure people to your site. But it all boils down to how you entertain the people who come over to join the party.
Let me ask you, have you been a good party host lately?
