Unemployment – A scary thing that can happen to anyone today especially with how the gears of the economy are spinning. It seems that our problems with the unemployment rate haven’t been solved yet.
And here we are, dependent with our monthly pay check, are doing everything to keep our 8AM-5PM job. But do you have a plan? If you get unemployed today, do you have a plan or something to keep you busy while waiting for the good times to go back?
Last year, when the recession started, I immediately created a plan in case I get unemployed. Here’s what I did.
- Created a Facebook account and connected with friends from here in the US and back home. Facebook is the place where you SHOULD be right now.
- Polished my LinkedIn account to connect with people who I worked with and some good friends in the industry.
- Created my resume in Visual CV for easy distribution.
- Started my blog, Social Media Philippines.
- Created my Twitter account and been active on it since.
You might be wondering why I focused on my social media channels. Weird? I’m not a social media guru but I do understand the power of networks and what it can do. These are the places where people gather nowadays. Sure, we still have bars and other places to hang out with but social media channels are very different.
If I Get Unemployed Today
I wouldn’t be very sad. In fact, I see it as an opportunity for me to create more meaningful content. Yes, I will have more time to give value to my visitors. I love what I do, both online and offline. I can say that my commitment with my online presence is half-hearted since I know that something will sustain me. You can call it part-time.
But I want to do well. I have this goal of becoming like Chris Brogan, Darren Rowse or Brian Clark with my own unique voice. Still plenty of rice to eat here before I reach that point but I will get there.
Actually, my contract will expire this coming November 5, 2009. I will join the pool of unemployed people after next week. What do I feel? I feel that a curse is about to fall upon my head and a blessing for me to finally show my commitment in what I said I love doing.
This is my plan. What do you think? Will this work for me? I will now have more time to create content and connect with people.
