Being a geek is awesome. You walk between the borders of being cool and intelligent but sometimes it develops a culture within you, unconsciously, that makes your actions a little bit weird for others. Are you meticulous, a perfectionist, fixated on something? Do you have obsessive-compulsive disorder?
Fear not! You’re not alone! I’ve been observing some of my friends every time we work together. Mind you, these are pure breed geeks. They’re type of people who will laugh out loud if somebody asks them if OS X can be installed in an AS400.
So, let’s see if you’re doing these things. It may prove that you’re an obsessive-compulsive geek.
When it comes to LCD screens or desktop monitors – You just hate it when somebody touches it. Your eyes become red and fire starts to appear around your iris when you see finger prints and other marks on the surface. Good thing you have the fiber cloth near you and you just wipe out those marks. You really need 30 minutes to do that?
When placing your laptop on your desk – You know the appropriate distance between your laptop, mouse pad, filing tray, phone and the trash can below your desk, our feet shouldn’t touch it or else you need to look down just to check it. It really needs to be placed on that exact spot or else your work flow will not flow. It should also accommodate the height you set for your desk lamp.
When it comes to your phone – HTC, iPhone, Palm, Blackberry, or whatever, we just love our phones and after every call, good thing we have another fiber cloth handy in our pocket to clean up that oil from our cheek. Or sometimes, we do that flash rub on our shirt, sometimes pants. Then we put it back in our case or pocket.
When it comes to you and your phone in a public establishment – The moment you pass the entrance, you scan for wifi networks. If you didn’t find one, you will be asking the lady in the information desk if there’s one somewhere in the mall or building. If there’s really none, thank God for 3G. You just need to do that check in via Foursquare.
When it comes to phone apps – You have more apps than phonebook entries. Yep! There are so many high-quality apps out there that are free. Games, productivity tools, news, you can spend the entire day downloading them and it won’t annoy you.
When it comes to owning an iPad – The first 3 items you’re going to buy are screen protector, a decent and cool-looking sleeve and of course, a fiber cloth. I can’t blame you for this since the last time you heard about tablets is when you watched The 10 Commandments. You just really need to keep that iPad sharp-looking all the time.
I can think of several other things that can be considered as OCD for geeks. The thing is, I want to hear them from you. I’m guilty of some of the things I wrote here and I sometimes wonder if it’s bad or irrational to be this way.
