To get your business off the ground, you’re going to have to master the art of promoting. You’re going to need to get the word out there, and the best way you’re going to do that is to effectively advertise your product.
You’re got many options to choose from. There’s traditional media to help you reach out to various audiences. However, since most people are getting their fill of information on the web, social media should also be a part of your promotional strategies.
You have to keep in mind, though, that social media has its difference from traditional media.
In traditional media, communications is mostly one way. You say your piece and then that’s it. There’s no means for viewers, listeners, and readers to give you a piece of your mind.
Social media, on the other hand, is two-way and participatory. Whatever you say or put in your ad copy, you can expect people to hear something back from your followers.
Now, with this in mind, how can you effectively promote your brand via the social web?
1. Stop talking about yourself. Although it’s not bad to talk about yourself/brand/product, overdoing it won’t help convince people to share you with their respective networks. Instead of concentrating on yourself, why not try to find a healthy balance between you and how people can relate your product to real life problems or concerns? Maybe then you’ll get heads to turn and mouths to start talking in your favor.
2. Set up listening stations everywhere. By this, I mean put up your own home page, establish listening outposts where it counts, and creating passports where there might be note-worthy buzz.
You have your home page to house your blog through which you primarily post your content. This is the main site where you do your main promotion at. You can then use your outposts (or sites where many gather) to further promote your blog and its contents.
Your passports, on the other hand, are social media accounts which you can create for good measure. You know, just to make sure that you have an account in places where conversations about you or your brand can pop up.
3. Get out there and start searching for your audience. A promotional strategy will work doubly efficient when you implement it where it counts. This means doing your promotions where interested audiences may be grouping.
Also, if you want to get their attention, show them that you’re paying attention to them, first. Visit their blogs and share comments on their blog posts. Always make sure, though, that your comments are relevant and insightful.
4. Seek the help of others to promote your stuff. Aside from word-of-mouth promotions that you’re aiming to get your audience to do in your favor, you may want to seek out the help of thought leaders in your field to help you spread the word.
However, you have to understand that not all experts agree to do this kind of promotion. You have to make sure that you tailor fit your pitch according to the individual.
5. Your turn
