4 Blogging Basics To Bring Back Our Sanity

by Rob Angeles on February 6, 2010

Blogging is so much fun. It’s so enjoyable that most writers, me included, get carried away with the things we write that we lose track of the basic stuff that should already be second nature to us already.

Yeah, even if you’ve been blogging for years, there will be things that you might overlook. So, let’s revisit some of these basics and hope we don’t forget them. What basic stuff am I talking about? They are:

31 Days To Build A Better Blog

1. A smashing title

This is what first gets the attention of people who visit your link. If they don’t like your title, they’ll leave your site faster than you can say “Oh my God, what the heck?!” even if you’ve written a pretty decent piece.

Always ask yourself before posting, “Would I be interested in reading something with this kind of title?” If you find yourself nodding, try to shuffle the title until you’re satisfied.

2. Posting for the readers

So you see, we writers have different passions. And when we get to write about our passions, we tend to forget that we’re writing for our readers, not just for ourselves.

There are cases where our thoughts become too complex that we churn out mile-long paragraphs that are boring and confusing to read. Again, this is what you don’t want to do because it’ll drive readers away.

You can try breaking down paragraphs into bullet lists or smaller paragraphs. This always makes posts simpler to read and understand. It works for a lot of people, me included.

3. Brevity is key

Again, as writers, it’s easy to get lost in word play. So much so that we come up with really fluffy articles or one that’s oozing with high-falluting words that misleads the readers from the actual point.

Besides, it’s actually nice to keep your blogs straight and simple. Sometimes, thinking of fluff words can really be stressful. At least when you’re going for straight to the point, you get your thoughts across faster.

4. Liven up your blog post

When writing, one sometimes gets too caught up in the momentum that you forget that looking at a blank page with nothing but words can be dull.

Why not bring it to life with a little picture or video attachment every now and then. Aside from the fact that you’re breaking the monotony of having only texts in the posts, it’ll also help you extend your point to your readers.

These are opinions based on what I, myself, forget at times. I’m not saying everybody does this, but you got to admit that the basics are among the easiest to forget, after all.

If you’d like to add anything to the list, please don’t hesitate to do so. I’d appreciate your feedback.
